Nic Cross beats Matt Cromwell in Final to Win Season 17 Heads-Up Championship

Last Friday night saw the season 17 Heads-Up Championships open up 2017 for the BCPC. 10 players stumped up the £20 entry fee with Matt Cromwell defending the Title he lifted back in August on his first attempt. The first 4 games in Group A saw 4 different winners with only Tony Trippier losing twice. As it got down to the wire Tod Wood had secured a Semi-Final spot but victory by Mr Trippier over Tony Griffiths left us with a 3-way tie for 2^nd so for the first time ever, we went to a 3-man turbo play-off to decide the second Semi-Finalist. Brian Yates got off to a great start but when Tony Griffiths shoved all-in on the button, Brian’s call with A-10 was crushed by Tony’s A-Q and soon Tony was up against Nic Crossfield for the spoils. Nic slowly took control before finishing Tony off to make his first ever Semi-Final. In Group B it was Adam Phelan who got off to a flyer with wins over Jake Poxon, Steve Healey and Adam Smith but amazingly, Adam Smith won his next three games while Champion Matt Cromwell did likewise and suddenly it was a 3-way tie in that group also, the difference being that 2 players would go through this time. Adam Phelan was the unlucky one being first out with Adam Smith going on to top the group and set up a clash with Nic in the Semi. Tod meanwhile would take on Matt in the other game. Both games were evenly poised at 1-1 but Matt just edged BCPC Legend Tod to reach his second straight Final while Nic overcame Adam. It was fitting that the Final also went to a third game but Matt just could not equal Adam Phelan’s feat in winning back-to-back Titles and it was Nic Crossfield who was crowned Heads-Up Champion, receiving the Trophy plus a £200 seat in the Walsall 25/25 event this weekend.
