Matt Kay Wins Season 16 Week 1, Tod Wood 2nd, Matt Godwin 3rd

BCPC Season 16, Game 1 – Friday 20 May 2016

Sitting comfortably? Good/tough. Welcome to season 16(!) of the BCPC.

Last season was a belter – in the final game, Claire Thornton pipped Chris Baker to the title by one point. That meant a female winner for the second season in a row, so the hat trick is on. 🙂

This season we had 4 new players – Amy Coshan, Rich Hughes, Matt Godwin and Lisa Whittingham. We also had returning players Charles Mason, Dawn Wilson Kev O’Driscoll, John Harfield (absent), Matt McKinlay (absent) and season 14 winner Laura Rhoden.

Tonight’s game

Well, I’ve never known a game quite so mental as this. The volume at the top end was quite something. It certainly lent to the atmosphere!

It was also the first time we’ve run the bounty game. So each person started with a £10 bounty on their head – if they get knocked out then the conqueror got half the bounty and the other half got added to their bounty.

Laura Rhoden started her first game since winning season 14 (after missing season 15) …. by being first out. Doh. Full house looked good but running into Charles Mason’s quad 4s was most certainly not.

It was quads again a few hands later, this time on the feature table as Chris Baker’s flopped quad 5s got a chunk off Brian Yates. After Chris’s bet, Bri called. Chris looked at Bri. Bri flipped over his KT to show top pair. Chris said, I win, and showed his quads. Lol. Mr Slow-roll.

Chris and Kev O’Driscoll talked A LOT about ‘tube’. Wtf?

Tod Wood was struggling but looked to get some chips back against Dawn Wilson all-in, having AQ against her Ac3c. The fact that I’ve told you she had two clubs may be a small clue to the outcome of this hand. The board ran out 4c5c6h…(so a few outs then!)…6d…Qc. Aaaagh!

But I survived whereas others continued to fall, and eventually we reached the final table.

Final table

Charles made the points in 10th – played super-aggro tonight!

Pos Name Commentary
9 Brian Yates Missed what happened here [insert embarrassed emoticon]
8 Adam Smith Tod raised on the button with Q4, and as Matt Kay reluctantly folded the SB (and gave a glare as he did so) it meant Adam was all-in to call. Being super-short he had no choice but his 56 fell short, Tod hitting trip queens.
7 Amy Coshan A standard 3-bet shove with JQs, but ran into Matt Godwin’s 99, which held. 7th on first appearance – not too shabby.
6 Rich Hughes Rich was chip leader for a while but lost around 30k when his flush-draw failed to hit on an earlier hand. Rich then made a move with KT but Tod was sat there with 2-pair and was able to make an easy call. A very good opening account from one of the new boys.
5 Matt Wilson Matt W made a move with K2, Matt G called with A9. A 9 in the door but a 2 in the chimney (or whatever) gave Matt W some hope, but the rest were blanks.
4 Kev Berrie Kev open shoved with K4. Matt Kay ummed and ahhed but eventually called, claiming he always runs good with J8. Not half! The board came 749TA.
3 Matt Godwin I also missed this one. Sorry! Let me know if you remember and I’ll amend. A fantastic first showing for Matt though.
Runner-up Tod Wood Need to take a big sigh before writing this bit. 🙂

Tod has a decentish chip lead. First hand, it all goes in, Tod AT vs Matt 44. The 4s hold.

Next hand Tod hits trip 4s. Lovely. Matt hits a straight (on the river, I think). Okay…

Three hands later, Tod raises with K6 and Matt calls. Flop is K63. Matt bets out, Tod reraises and Matt shoves. Tod instas, obvs, and Matt shows K2. Yay, Tod wins the first game of the season! Wahoo! I mean, as long as nothing daft happens…

Turn 5. That’s okay. No longer 99% favourite, but still 90%. It’s all fine…

River 4. Awww, maaaaaan!

Winner Matt Kay Well played, Matt. Obviously had a bit of luck at the end but played really well as always and a deserved winner.

Cash game

I liked this exchange:

Chris (very drunk): “Kev, are you playing cash?”

Kev: “I am if you are.”

Lolz.

I missed a lot of the early action but managed to play an hour or so at the end.

We played quite a bit of Badugi.

Tony Trippier (just joined the table): “What’s Badugi?”

Brian (singing): “Baduuugi Nights!”

Tony: “No but what *is* Badugi?”

Brian (still singing): “Baduuugi Nights!”

Tony: “Very good, I like what you’re doing there, but what’s Badugi?”

Brian and Tod (in harmony): “BADUUUGI NIGHTS!”

As it turned out, Tony was shit at Badugi anyway.

TV

TV is pretty crazy at the moment. My top 3 picks are:

  • The Windsors (C4) – very silly but really makes me laugh
  • The final series of Banshee (Sky Atlantic) – the whole series is available to download
  • Silicon Valley series 3 (Sky Atlantic) – always amusing
